Covered Bridges
The Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama showcases its three covered bridges each fall during
the Covered Bridge Festival. Arts and crafts are favorite attractions, and customs of
Blount County's storied past are brought to life in its Bygone Days festivities held
annually at Palisades Park.
Palisades Park
Nationally recognized Palisades Park, overlooking beautiful pristine valleys, is the
center of many activities in Blount County. Maintained in its natural state, the park
provides an opportunity to get back to nature and its simpler way of life. Lodges located
in the park are popular meeting places for all occasions. Visitors and residents are
fascinated with the pioneer cabins, an inspiring meditation point, and the county's oldest
one-room schoolhouse. Naturalists while away the hours at the herb garden, nature trails,
museum, and arboretum.
Walking/Jogging
Several municipalities afford walking/jogging tracks, and Covered Bridge Runners welcomes
new members. Many tree-shaded country lanes make for delightful walking, as do nature
trails at Palisades Park.
Water Sports
Blount County's Warrior River offers the finest in canoeing and kayaking. Five lakes,
including Highland and Inland, offer both fishing and swimming, public boat ramp, and
water sports.
Clubs and Organizations
The Chamber of Commerce, Extension Homemakers Clubs, a quilters guild, men's and women's
service and civic organizations, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, American Red Cross,
Salvation Army, and many other groups offer stimulating and meaningful involvement for
seniors. Many of these organizations hold annual banquets or luncheons and holiday
barbecues. Good food and fellowship abound. Christmas projects include the annual
Christmas Parade, the Festival of Trees, and the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show.
Golf
Covered Bridge Golf Course offers eighteen holes among gently rolling hills and sparkling
streams. Heritage Green's eighteen holes are nestled around the valley below Palisades
Park. Maple Hills and Whispering Pines feature nine hole courses designed to sharpen your
short game.
Fishing and Hunting
Anglers will find good fishing in Blount County. Five lakes, including Highland and
Inland, offer both fishing and swimming, public boat ramp, and water sports. Species
include bream, large-mouth bass, crappie, trout, and catfish, to name a few. The
freshwater fishing season is open 365 days a year with generous creel limits.
Hunting, one of the most popular
sports in the state, offers deer, wild turkey, squirrel, rabbit, racoon, possum, dove,
quail, and a variety of waterfowl as game. Alabama is recognized for having one of the
most liberal hunting seasons and bag limits in the nation.
Livestock Activities
The Winter Horse Show Circuit at the Blount County - Oneonta Agri-Business Center takes
place each January and February and helps raise money for local volunteer fife and rescue
organizations. The 4H/FFA Steer Show offers club members a chance to display their
livestock. The Championship Pro Rodeo comes to town in April to bring out the cowboy in us
all. |
